Sia was a labrador that we got from the Chatsworth pound when he was 3 months old. He was the first lab we had ever owned. We got him primarily as a companion for Rosie, because she was starting to get old, but we also wanted another dog anyway. He turned out to be a delight... such a personality... such a joker. He had one bad habit, though, when the weather turned bad he freaked. Last Monday, October 5, it turned hot and windy. I was at work in the Valley, (we live in Thousand Oaks), and he jumped the wall of our back yard and ran into the front and out into the street where he was hit and killed by a hit and run driver. I came home and found a note on the front door that the neighbors had found him and had called the pound to pick him up. There was also a note from the pound. o make a long story short, the pound had him disposed of before I could even talk to anyone there. Sia was licensed, and I left them messages when I found their note. I asked them if I could have his collar, and that had been thrown in the garbage. But on nice lady dug around and found it for me. I am very angry at the pound, though, for disposing of his body without even returning my calls. The reason I am contacting you is because we want to get another lab. I know it won't be Sia, but we will give it a good home. Rosie is lonely, and so are we all. There are four of us. We don't need a show quality dog, just a good friend to love. I was told about your website from someone on Pedigree Ask a Vet because I had a problem with cleft palates in my last litter. It was a first litter for the bitch and the second one for the stud. I was crazed trying to find out why. My main concern w s whether this was a genetic problem, but most of the feedback I received tells me its not. I still haven't pinpointed what might of caused it. But I intend to breed these two again and I'll be sure to be aware of everything in the environment to preve t this. By the way, I absolutely love your kennel name!!!!

Was very interested in your experiences with LP. Our dog just went thru the surgery and aspiration pneumonia right afterward. She has been home for just about a week and is still having some trouble drinking water. I have the dish elevated, but she is still coughing after she drinks. Any further suggestions? I am going to pass along the article from your page to my vet. They did not pick up on the problem and it took a crisis and a very sharp vet (this happened while visiting away from home) to come up with the diagnosis. She had to have the surgery on almost an emergency basis. I was amazed to see how much your Kansas and my Pepper looked alike!! Especially with the shaved neck! My dog was born on April 28, 1986, so they are almost the same age. I enjoyed your page and have bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks for all the info. J. Garder

Enjoyed reading Kansas' story. Maggie got overheated yesterday having escaped for play in the "real world" and returned in severe respiratory stress. The emergency clinic found 107 temp, sedated her, cooled her, and we first learned about LP. Her case s not severe, and started about two years ago with only slight progression. We'll see what the future holds. Tonight she's home and normal.
